…copy that sounds human

…clear messaging that inspires action

I’d be delighted to work together.

“Laurel is without hesitation the best anglophone writer I've met in my career. The quality of her writing is incredible, as is the reliability of her research and sources.”

My experience

1

I worked at the Montreal-based marketing agency Espresso communication for eight years, writing, editing, and translating all kinds of content. Websites, emails, social media, blogs, taglines, the list goes on! Clients included businesses in retail, tech, healthcare, and tourism. I also led the copywriting for two major website relaunches for the agency itself.

I was initially hired as a French-to-English translator and content writer. Eventually I discovered that creative, high-impact, short-form copywriting was what I loved best. I learned by doing — writing and rewriting drafts of site pages and emails and social captions, and by discussing and brainstorming with my talented colleagues. Along the way, I took courses and workshops through CopyKooks, UX Writing Hub, and Editors Canada.

My approach

2

Whatever I’m writing, clarity comes first. I’ll never put words on the page just because they sound clever. They have to mean something to the people reading them.

So, before I start drafting your copy, I take the time to understand your target audience. That may include interviewing your past or current clients/customers to hear why they chose you, in their own words. I’ll use these insights to make sure your messaging speaks to the people you want to reach.

I’ll also ask you lots of questions about your values and goals. If we’re establishing your brand voice, we’re going to get really specific about who you are and how you want to come across in your marketing. This is so that I can create tone of voice guidelines that go beyond broad adjectives like “friendly” and “professional.” The more differentiated your tone of voice is, the more you’ll stand out.

How I use and don’t use AI

3

As I write, I’ll often uncover ideas or angles we may not have considered. (Writing is thinking, as they say.) This is a big reason why I prefer not to use AI for first drafts. I find that once AI-generated copy is in my head, there’s less space for fresh, unconventional ideas to show up.

I do use AI to assist with other tasks. I might ask it to suggest alternative wording as I’m editing, or to summarize data as I’m researching. But by writing your copy myself, I can guarantee you’ll be getting something truly original and 100% yours.
